New music: Japanese pop meets metalcore

IS IT Japanese pop? Is it metal rock?

It's something right in the middle and it has Japanese and Asia-Pacific metal fans drooling.

The all-girl-fronted Japanese heavy metal/teen-pop hybrid group Babymetal has released Metal Resistance this week via RAL/Sony Music Entertainment.

Metal Resistance is currently sitting #2 on the iTunes album chart, #1 on the iTunes Metal Album Chart and the single Karate still holds the #1 spot on the iTunes Metal Singles Chart, as heard on Triple J.

The video for Karate has had more than 3.4 million views since its premiere two weeks ago.

2015 was a breakout year for Babymetal, the young trio of 17-year-old Su-Metal (Vocal, Dance) and 16-year-olds Yuimetal (Scream, Dance) and Moametal (Scream, Dance), backed by a four-piece band packing a heavy metal arsenal.

They re-released their 2014 chart topping self-titled debut album, were the most sought-after band at Rock on the Range and completed sold-out dates at Chicago's House of Blues and New York City's Hammerstein Ballroom.

Metal Resistance is out now.
