WHEN the first passenger steam train commenced operation in Australia in 1854, it was the beginning of an important era for transport in this vast continent.

Railway construction expanded rapidly across the country to alleviate the isolation of remote settlements and reduce the cost and time of delivering supplies.

In those early days railway track workers established a tradition of innovation, adaptation and initiative in building and maintaining tracks in Australia's harsh conditions.
