P-plater warned after early morning DUI

SCOTT Mossman smoked a joint with a mate - and then drove, at 2.30am.

His purple Mitsubishi Mirage was an easy spot for the police patrol that stopped the errant Provisional driver and repeat traffic offender.

In court yesterday, Prosecutor Sgt Pepe Gangemi said that when officers stopped him, Mossman had been very nervous, shaking, his speech slurred, eyes bloodshot and the smell of burned cannabis emanating from his Mirage.

"He said he was at a mate's place and smoked half a joint," Sgt Gangemi said.

"He was also subject to late night driving restrictions."

Mossman, 21, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence on July 5, being a P2 licence holder with no P-plates displayed, and being a particular licence holder who drove between 11pm and 5am without an exemption.

Magistrate Penelope Hay said he was a repeat offender within five years, with five traffic offences just last year including speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol.

"You don't seem to be getting the message Mr Mossman. If you keep this up you will end up in prison," she said.

"Your traffic history is very poor."

"Yes I do (get the message)," Mossman replied.

Ms Hay said it was clear that he had been under the influence of a substance yet was driving at 2.30am despite restrictions put in place to ensure young drivers like him do not go out late and kill or injure themselves.

Mossman was fined $1000 and disqualified for the mandatory nine months.
