Parents on trial for sick act in front of kids

A mother and father who allegedly exposed their children to sexual acts will be trialled separately.

Prosecutors will allege that the father sexually assaulted two of their three children and the mother did not attempt to stop it. It is also alleged the father performed sexual acts on the mother, forcing the three children, aged 6, 4 and 1, to watch.

An application was made at Townsville District Court to have the pair trialled together, but Judge William Everson dismissed the application.

The mother and father cannot be named for legal reasons.

It will be alleged that incidents of offending, which the parents are charged with, occurred within the family's home and near a river.

The acts are alleged to have occurred between May 2016 and May 2017.

The father is charged with three counts of indecent treatment of a child under 12, two counts of rape and one count of attempted incest.

The mother is accused with being party to all but one of these charges.

He said there were some reasons why the husband and wife should be tried together, but ruled that they should be heard separately.

Judge Everson said this was to ensure there was no bias against either parent.

Judge Everson made the decision in a pre-trial hearing yesterday.
