Police release a snake back into the wild after it was found being illegally kept on a Roma property.

THE scales of justice are yet to catch up with two Roma men caught with a captured python and a drug stash in their property this week.

Roma's Stock and Rural Crime Investigation Squad and Criminal Investigation Branch detectives last week executed a search warrant of a Roma  property and made a somewhat surprising discovery.

Along with a stash of drugs and drug-related items, police also found a python that was being kept in an aquarium by the property owners.

Police said the owners admitted they captured the snake in a nearby paddock and had put it in the aquarium tank but had failed to get the necessary accreditation to keep the native animal in captivity.

On advice from the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection, SARCIS detectives were able to release the snake back into nearby bushland because it had only recently been caught.

Police have charged two men with offences stemming from the property search.

A 17-year-old Roma man was charged in relation to keeping the native animal, as well as other drug, property and firearms offences.

A 24-year-old man from Roma was also charged with drug, property and firearms offences.

Both are due to appear in the Roma Magistrates Court at a later date.
