Pollies plan to expose 'predatory' pokie industry
THREE federal parliamentarians launched a campaign yesterday urging insiders to leak information on the poker machine industry.
Senators Nick Xenophon and Larissa Waters and Tasmanian MP Andrew Wilkie MP are pursuing poker machine reform at the state and federal level.
"I hope 'Pokie-Leaks' will encourage at least three types of people to come forward,” Sen Xenophon said.
"Firstly, those who have been directly affected by pokies - their stories of the damage and devastation caused by predatory gambling is incredibly powerful in arguing for reform.
"Secondly, those who have worked in venues can relay details of any sharp practices used and the in- effectiveness of so-called harm-minimisation measures.
"And finally, those invol- ved in machine design could provide incredibly important information to unlock the secrets of what many consider to be a deceptive and dangerous product.”
The MPs plan to make information leaked to them publicly available, using parliamentary privilege.
