VIDEO: Canavan talks potential jobs for GKI at rally
ROCKHAMPTON-based LNP Senator Matt Canavan urged the Palaszczuk Government to grant Great Keppel Island a boutique gaming license during Saturday's Our Keppel Our Future rally.
"If you're serious about creating an alternative source of employment after the Yabulu refinery, after the mining downturn, give Great Keppel Island a boutique gaming license," he said.
"It is simple. You give ... a boutique gaming license and there's the potential for 1500 jobs."
A spokesperson for State Development Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said job generation was something all levels of government should work on.
"We'd prefer Senator Canavan to work with us, the local councils, and the private sector to accelerate works across the state wherever we can," they said.
"Our Working Queensland Cabinet Committee has met in Townsville and will meet in other regional centres, including central Queensland, over coming months.
"Tower Holdings has all the state approvals it needs to start work now on refurbishing the resort at Great Keppel."
