Prisoner does a runner after guilty verdict

DRAMATIC scenes in Toowoomba Supreme Court last night as a prisoner jumped over the dock wall into the court proper upon hearing verdicts of guilty against him.

Thomas James Carlin was quickly wrestled to the courtroom floor and handcuffed by three police officers in front of a stunned jury of seven women and five men.

"I've just been set up, I've just been set up", the 26-year-old yelled as he was dragged by the officers back into the dock.

Carlin was found guilty after a three-day trial of possessing more than 2g of MDMA (ecstasy), more than 50g of testosterone in 11 vials, more than 500g of marijuana and to possessing a fully loaded nine-shot revolver.

Those items and $32,050 in cash had all been found in a sports bag in a room at the Shamrock Hotel on September 16 last year.

Carlin had pleaded not guilty to each charge.

His barrister Andrew Hoare pointed out during the trial that another man who worked at the hotel had been captured by the pub's CCTV cameras carrying that bag at the relevant time.

His client had been staying at the Shamrock Hotel's motel section at the time but he had not been in the room where a cleaner had found the sports bag.

Crown prosecutor Greg Cummings told the jury Carlin's computer tablet with more than 900 images of his baby daughter had been found inside the sports bag with the drugs, cash and revolver as had car registration papers in the name of his girlfriend.

Given the emotional state of Carlin after the verdicts, Justice Peter Applegarth said he was not prepared to sentence him last night.

Instead, Justice Applegarth adjourned sentence to the Brisbane Supreme Court at a date to be fixed and remanded Carlin in custody.
