The Project pokes fun at Ten

THE hosts of The Project have poked fun at today's news its broadcaster Network Ten has been placed into voluntary administration after its billionaire backers walked away.

Host Carrie Bickmore reported on the story during her opening bulletin and assured viewers that, despite the network's troubles, "we are not going anywhere" and it's "business as usual".

That's when the program cut to the "loss of signal" colour bars.

For several seconds, the program pretended to be out of signal and remained in silence.

Suddenly cutting back to the set, co-host Peter Helliar crawled up from underneath the newsdesk, holding a power cord.

"Sorry, I just bumped this plug," he told viewers. "I didn't realise this was down here, I didn't realise I had so much power - I'll put it back in."

Co-host Waleed Aly  joked: "No, I think we've got Bert Newton out the back just peddling (a bike) to keep the generator going."

And the  jokes didn't stop there. Following a report about the amount of time women spend looking through their handbag, Helliar got one more joke in.

"If you do find spare change (in your bag), send it in to Channel Ten!"

The network was placed into voluntary administration on Wednesday after it emerged that Ten shareholders Lachlan Murdoch, Bruce Gordon and James Packer decided against guaranteeing a new $250 million loan to replace the existing $200 million overdraft, which needs to be repaid to Commonwealth Bank in December.
