Qantas mechanical failure means flyers left 1800km away

QANTAS has grounded a Mount Isa to Townsville flight and diverted passengers 1800km south to Brisbane.

The Qantas Link flight was immediately cancelled on Sunday night after a mechanical fault with the Dash-8 aircraft.

About 30 passengers will overnight in Brisbane before flying north.

It comes just days after a mid-air emergency on a Rex aircraft from Cairns to Mt Isa.

The Rex twin turbo-prop aircraft with about 20 passengers and crew onboard reported engine troubles about 8am on Thursday.

It was midway through a two hour flight from Cairns when engine alarms forced the aircraft to turn back.
