QFF positive about Federal Budget for QLD agriculture

THE Queensland Farmers Federation welcomed the 2017 Federal Budget as one that will deliver steady and responsible long term investment that will support Queensland agriculture.

QFF president Stuart Armitage said the budget has a balanced and considered approach to funding projects that will directly benefit agriculture and regional Queensland, making mention of the National Landcare Program and the Regional Investment Corporation.

"QFF is eager to see what benefits will flow for Queensland farmers out of the Regional Investment Corporation (RIC) funded in this Budget,” Mr Armitage said.

The governments announcement of a $1 billion investment over five years in the National Landcare Program was also commended by Mr Armitage and the QFF.

"In particular the allocation of funds towards eradicating Red Imported Fire Ants from south-east Queensland,” Mr Armitage said.

"Fire Ants are a major issue for farmers across many agricultural industries and we welcome this targeted funding to help resolve the devastating economic, environmental and social impacts of one of the world's worst invasive species.”

Mr Armitage said the budget had delivered upon several of the promises made for the agricultural sector.

"With some important investments on infrastructure projects of national significance, however there are some notable shortcomings,” Mr Armitage said.
