Queensland moves closer to legalising medicinal marijuana

QUEENSLAND will move a step closer to legalising medical marijuana today.

Speaking in Queensland Parliament today Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the government would introduce a bill to legalise using the drug as a medicine.

Ms Palaszczuk said the government had been working closely with the Federal, NSW and Victorian governments.

"I have been moved by the stories of families with young children with epilepsy, suffering life-threatening seizures, and what they have to go through on a daily basis," she said.

"This legislation will provide a transparent and robust regulatory framework to manage access to medicinal cannabis.

"It has been informed by consultation with medical specialists and stakeholder groups, Hospital and Health Services and importantly members of the public and potential recipients."

But Ms Palaszczuk said the bill was not a "green light" for recreational use or unregulated growing of marijuana.

"However, the lawful production of medicinal cannabis does present an opportunity for Queensland businesses to supply goods to this expanding market," she said.
