Queensland to contest national gold medal game

QUEENSLAND has qualified for Sunday's Indoor Hockey National Championships gold medal match.

The Sunshine State's representatives, which features Maryborough hockey players Trudi Pedersen and Eva Golusin along with Lyn (manager) and Roy Tucker (assistant coach), defeated ACT 3-2 in Saturday afternoon's preliminary final to qualify.

The scores were locked at 2-all until Ipswich's Eden Jackat found the net midway through the second half.

It sets up a clash with the table-topping Western Australians, who smashed New South Wales 9-1 in the other preliminary final.

WA is the only undefeated team so far, and won its round robin game against Queensland 6-3 on Friday afternoon.

Queensland qualifies despite having finished the round robin stage in fourth, with a 1-3 record and goal difference of -4.

The Maroons beat the ACT 4-2 in their first game, then lost to Tasmania, NSW and WA by one, two and three goals respectively.

A 4-3 loss to NSW in Saturday morning's semi final set up the winner-takes-all clash with the ACT, the only team Queensland has defeated at this national championships.

That loss may have been a blessing, as they avoided the WA juggernaut until the game that matters most.

Pedersen, an Australian representative, has played all six games so far. Golusin has scored one goal in her five goals to date.

NSW and ACT will battle for third place on Sunday, with Tasmania fifth.
