GYMPIE region Mayor Mick Curran has welcomed comments from the State Development Minister indicating there could be some hope for getting the Mary Valley Rattler back on track.

Minister Anthony Lynham said in a letter to the editor published in The Gympie Times on Wednesday it was "important that people interested in the future of the Mary Valley Rattler know all the facts".

He said officials from his department were continuing to work with the operators of the Rattler to put it on a firmer financial footing with a "solid and sustainable business plan".

Cr Curran said Dr Lynham's "recognition of the importance of regions to Queensland and the importance of the Rattler to the Gympie region is welcomed".

"I look forward to progressing dialogue with him regarding the business plan and funding," he said.

"It is important that all the parties involved in the Rattler move forward in a cohesive manner to ensure that it is on a firm financial foundation.

"The Department of State Development is obviously a significant component of the future of the Rattler.

"Council, the Rattler Railway Company and community need to work with the State Government to progress the business plan process and continue funding negotiations."
