OPINION: Reach out when times are tough

NEVER in a thousand years did I think I'd be writing this column for the Central and North Burnett Times.

Come to think of it, I never thought I'd be writing for a paper at all.

I've been through a lot thus far in my short life, and many people would say I'm where I am today in spite of my past, that it defines me as a human being.

And it is in that spirit that I'm opening up to you about my mental health struggles, past and ongoing, in the hope that people will reach for the help they need.

I was 20 when I was first hospitalised with mental illness, spending four months receiving inpatient treatment for depression and other illnesses.

At the time of my admission I had ceased caring for myself, and had given up all hope.

I was a broken mess.

During the period of December 2014 to March 2015, I spent both Christmas and my 21st birthday in psychiatric care.

Sure, it sucked, but it was better than the alternative.

Unfortunately, this week I've had a minor relapse, but I recognised early what was happening and reached out to get the help I needed to get back on track.

As my Aunty Wendy says, "How do you know tomorrow isn't going to be the best day of your life?"

We can't answer that if we're not here.

If you're struggling, reach out and get help.

There isn't anybody who won't be missed by somebody.
