OUT in the wild, it is the kangaroo that hops all over the red ant.

But at the Monto Combined Sportsground, it's the red ant that crushes the kangaroo.

At least that's what happened when the Kingaroy Red Ants came up to Monto to take on the Monto Roos in a showdown.

Kingaroy quickly jumped to lead but about ten minutes in, but Monto was on the board when Wayne Smith crossed the line.

"When I had the ball, I just ran," he said.

"I didn't do it myself though.

"Squirt (Shane Carter) helped set the point up.

"It felt good doing something for the team."

It was his third try so far in the season.

Little did the team know that it wouldn't be until the second half that the team would see their score go up once more, when Daniel Nancarrow would score a try followed by a conversion by Tyson Mitchell.

Ultimately, Kingaroy won

84-10.

Roos coach Mathew Dahtler was surprised at the performance of the team, especially as most allegedly did not indulge in party activities the night before.

"We knew Kingaroy was going to be a tough team to play," he said.

"Generally playing a strong team makes us lift our game and play better.

"Really, we just did everything wrong today.

"The thing we did do well is scramble in defence, but we shouldn't have been in that position in the first place."

The team have two weeks to prepare until their next

match.

Kingaroy coach Darren Geiger congratulated his team on the strong effort, particularly taking in consideration that short number and the commute.

"We had 15 players - many couldn't make it due to weddings and work commitments," he said.

"Our best asset was defence and we capitalised on Monto's dropped balls."

Captain Marty McCracken agreed that it has given the team a confidence boost.

"Its cliché, but it really was a team effort and that shows from the high number of players getting a try," he said.

"We had a good start and the message was to keep it simple, keep going, don't overcomplicate and stick to a tight game plan."
