Reds complete a remarkable renaissance

Adelaide United has completed one of the most unlikely comebacks in Australian sport, beating Western Sydney 3-1 in the A-League grand final.

The Reds were winless in their first eight games of the season, before a stunning form reversal saw them take out the premiership and the championship decider in their third grand final.

Goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic could not hold back tears at full-time.

"I've been here a long time and we finally got the (premiership and championship) double - 50,000 fans spurred us on and helped us today," he told Fox Sports.

The Reds hit the front in the 22nd minute, with a cross from midfield magician Marcelo Carrusca met by Bruce Kamau, who had only just come on.

The 21-year-old became the second-fastest scorer in an A-League grand final.

Kamau played a part in his team's second goal, brought down just outside the box in the 33rd minute, before an exquisite Isaias free kick went past stunned Wanderers goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne into the top-left corner. The Wanderers hit back in the 58th minute when Scott Neville smashed a shot past Galekovic for his memorable first A-League goal.

But the Reds were too good, super-sub Pablo Sanchez capitalising on a Kearyn Baccus error to score in the 90th minute.

The Wanderers have now lost three grand finals in their four seasons in the competition.

Adelaide United 3 (Kamau 22, Isaias, Pablo Sanchez 90) def Western Sydney 1 (Neville 58). Crowd: 50,119 at Adelaide Oval.
