Reel women line up for Coast fishing competition

THE thrill of reeling in her best fish is something Christie Turner hopes more women can experience.

She will bait up her hooks today for a ladies-only competition run by the Mooloolaba Game Fishing Club.

"This one (competition) is my absolute favourite because it is a chance for all of the ladies," Miss Turner, 26, said.

"This is a day that is just dedicated to them."

A lifelong fisher, she regarded her best catch as a blue marlin caught off Mooloolaba about two years ago.

It weighed about 225kg (500 pounds) but was not properly weighed because it was released back into the sea.

"I mainly do black marlin fishing but that was my first ever blue."

She said she had competed in the competition every year since it started four years ago and encouraged others to join her.

"It is to give them a go at it and see how fun it actually is.

"You kind of fall in love with it after you catch your first marlin."

She said she had seen beginners catch exceptional fish on their first go in the competition.

"I love getting women into this sport.

"It is really fun and we don't have enough women."

About 35 anglers have registered to set off on 11 boats for today's event.

Mooloolaba Game Fishing Club president Josh Cox said the competition was sanctioned with relevant state, national and international fishing bodies.

He said any record-breaking fish would be recognised by those organisations.

"It is one of only two female competitions in Australia," Mr Cox said.
