Rich racing history continues at Eidsvold

FAMILY, fashion and fun are the focus for the Eidsvold Race Club as it enters the spring racing carnival in its 130th year.

The club is gearing up to host the town's second major race day of the year on Saturday, October 6.

The decision was made to move the date from its traditional home in February to avoid the temperamental summer weather, after torrential rain forced organisers to reschedule this year's meeting at the last-minute.

The change ushers in an exciting new chapter for North Burnett horse racing.

The more than a century- old race day is woven into the fabric of Eidsvold.

The names of many of its pioneers remain in the district today.

Club spokeswoman and local racing identity, Annie Connolly, said the Eidsvold Race Club intended to embrace the event's history.

"I don't think it's possible to have a bad day at the Eidsvold Races,” Ms Connolly said.

"We're really excited about it and I think the town is too.

"There is so much history.

"A lot of the family names involved in the earlier race days are still around.

"Their younger generations are in the community and it really is a family-orientated event.

"There has been tremendous support, not just from Eidsvold but from the surrounding towns as well.”

The famous Haupt grandstand, built in 1970, has been re-purposed to make room for the hundreds of punters that will pour into the track when gates open at 11am.

A total of $40,000 in prizemoney is up for grabs across the five-race program, that concludes with the 1350m Bruce Chiene Insurance Brokers & Schafer Family Eidsvold Cup.

There will be an ATM and bookies trackside to make sure you back the winners, plus free shuttle buses from Mundubbera and Eidsvold, live music, children's entertainment, plenty of food options and free camping with hot showers.

In the afternoon, the focus will be on the head-turning frocks and fascinators in the Variations of Violet-themed Fashions on the Field.

Eidsvold hosts the first leg of the 2019 Regional Fashions on the Field, an initiative started by club president Lyle Murray and resident fashionista Lucy Connolly.

Winners receive a race day and accommodation package for two to attend a race day during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival. Each prize is valued at over $500.

Proudly representing the Burnett, Shannyn Hopkins, who won Eidsvold's inaugural Regional Fashion on the Field at the club's February meet, went on to be crowned Best Dressed in the Women's Racewear category at the Ladies Oaks Day in Brisbane.

Mount Perry's Corey Johanson placed second on the same day in a glowing advertisement for the region's signature style.

Heats for the competition will be held at each of the North Burnett's other race days in Gayndah (October 13), Mount Perry (November 17) and Monto (March 30, 2019).

Jockeys will don black arm bands in memory of Janelle Connolly, the club's former sponsorship officer, who passed away on September 1.

Janelle adored her hometown event and cherished the lifelong friends she made through her involvement in racing.

Her daughters continue to play active rolls within the committee.

Table bookings are essential. Contact Annie Connolly on 0427651834.
