RIO 2016: First sailing medal for Australia at Games

SAILING: Tom Burton is guaranteed at least a bronze medal in Tuesday morning's double points gold medal race in the Laser class.

The world No.1 is in second but it has been a battle to stay in touch with leader Croatian Tonci Stipanovic.

Stipanovic is 10 points ahead of Burton with New Zealand's Sam Meech 10 points behind in third.

Burton said after those struggles he wasn't even sure he would be in with a shout of getting in the top three.

"I thought I had some bad days, and then people came out the next day and had much worse days than me," he said.

"After the third day I kind of thought I was nearly out of it."

"It's nice to have a medal locked in," Burton added.

"Tonci will probably have plans to have gold locked away, so I think it will be a good race."
