Roma’s Rugby 7s tournament set to return in 2021
The Rugby 7s tournament will be back on in 2021 with teams from across the state to converge at Roma, with a potential prize pool worth tens of thousands of dollars for this year's winner.
Roma's first game will be held at Gallas Fox Park on Saturday, February 6, with men and women from across the Central Highlands, Rockhampton, and Brisbane join with local teams in the hotly contested tournament.
Sponsored by Origin Energy, the women's competition is hoping for 16 teams, an increase from 12 in 2020, to play it out for the hotly contested Emilee Cherry Cup.
Roma's ladies will be competing against their city friends, and Maranoa residents are invited to this exciting event.
Eighteen men's teams will compete in the social men's competition, providing strong competition and a record of 42 teams, of women and men, will compete in the tournament. This could bring a much-needed boost to tourism and the economy of the Maranoa Region.
Origin's general manager of Spring Gully and Denison Asset Dave Atkin said Origin is proud to promote female sporting talent from regional areas in 2021.
"This is an exciting time for the Maranoa as community activities are reinstated following a tough year of COVID-19 restrictions," he said.
"This competition brings talent and visitors to our region and gives our community a chance to come together to support each other."
The prize purse on offer in 2020, covered by nomination fees, was among the highest across all single division rugby competitions in Australia, totalling $22,500.
The size of this prize purse has attracted even more high-quality teams to the tournament this year, with eight elite teams competing in a higher-grade premier men's competition, in addition to 18 club/social men's teams.
Roma Echidnas player Georgie Walton said she is grateful for gold sponsor Origin sponsoring this year's women's competition.
"Last year was my first year playing for the Echidna's women's side and I thoroughly enjoyed it," she said.
"It gave me the opportunity to try something new, keep fit and meet some amazing people."
Roma Rugby 7s co-ordinator David Hickey said the Echidnas host the game on the first Saturday in February every year and a record 16 teams will compete for the Emilee Cherry Cup.
