Samuels forthright in opinion

ATHLETICS: Finishing with a best-ever performance at an Olympics was no consolation for veteran Australian discus thrower Dani Samuels.

Samuels, who in 2009 became the youngest ever world champion in the event, at age 21, just missed out on a medal in Rio, finishing fourth with a throw of 64.90m

Croatia's Sandra Perkovic won gold (69.21m) from France's Melina Robert-Michon (66.73m) and Cuba's Denia Caballero (65.34m).

"I've come ninth and 11th at my previous Olympics and now fourth. And now I think about it, those positions all suck,” Samuels told media.

It was even worse for Australia's best javelin thrower Kim Mickle, who had to be carted out of the Olympic stadium writhing in agony after dislocating her shoulder.

Returning from a shoulder reconstruction, the Australian record-holder and 2013 world championships silver medallist had been left walking around saying "help me”.

Sprinter Ella Nelson, 22, was a little happier with her result in the 200m. The rising star missed the final by one hundredth of a second but ran a personal best of 22.50sec in the semi.

"I'm lost for words, I just ran a PB at the Olympic Games. That was incredible, that was so much fun, I felt awesome,” Nelson told Channel Seven.
