Seeney didn't document reasoning behind R4R decisions

QUEENSLAND'S Auditor-General has criticised former Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney's failure to document how and why he chose which projects to fund under the Royalties for Regions program.

In a public hearing of the parliamentary Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources committee, Queensland Auditor-General Andrew Greaves said his office found little documentation about why Mr Seeney's office chose projects over others.

Mr Greaves told the committee some Royalties for Regions funded projects were chosen over projects that had been rated more highly.

He said he did not dispute a minister's ability to choose certain projects despite departmental advice - but said it should be documented for better transparency.

"The department that was administrating the program could not demonstrate that the suite of programs were the optimal projects," he said.

"There was not documentation about why certain projects were funded and others were not."

In a report on Royalties for Regions released last year Mr Greaves said certain projects had been funded despite not being eligible under the guidelines.

At the time Mr Seeney said Mr Greaves's report was "completely misunderstanding and misrepresenting" the project.

"Conducting an audit from a fundamentally wrong starting perspective has understandably produced a preliminary draft report that is grossly misleading and fundamentally flawed," he said.

When Labor was elected they renamed the project Building Our Regions.

Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg CORRECT announced on Sunday the LNP would reintroduce and "upgrade" Royalties for Regions if elected. - ARM NEWSDESK
