SEQ storms bring down powerlines

LATEST: STORMS have now moved past Ipswich and Brisbane and are no longer affecting the south-east.

The storms knocked down powerlines in Ipswich, causing outages at traffic lights and widespread loss of power to homes.

Heavy rainfall was recorded in locations across the south-east, including 61mm in less than half an hour at Mt Stradbroke near Marburg.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the situation would continue to be monitored throughout the night.

Residents shared pictures and videos of the large hail that struck at Gatton and Ipswich.

EARLIER: HAIL has been reported at Gatton and Ipswich as fast-moving storms make their way across South East Queensland.

The damaging storms are expected to hit Brisbane this afternoon as well as Grantham and Murphy's Creek.

BoM said Atkinson Dam recorded 35mm of rain in 25 minutes.

The storms bought down powerlines in Ipswich and have left an estimated 6000 homes without power.

General storm warnings are also in place for areas further north in the state, including Capricornia, Wide Bay and the Central Coast.

EARLIER: SOUTH east Queensland is in for another afternoon of storms, with damaging winds and hail forecast for the Esk region.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued the storm warning at 3.34pm, showing storms near Esk moving northeast.

"They are forecast to affect Mulgowie, the D'Aguilar Ranges and Toogoolawah by 4:05 pm and Laidley, Gatton and Kilcoy by 4:35 pm," the warning said.

The next warning is due to be issued by 4.35pm.

The storms follow a day of steamy weather for much of the state, with places such as Oakey reaching 36 degrees.
