A SEVERE thunderstorm warning is currently in place for areas of Biggenden and Mount Perry.

The warnings show Maryborough and Hervey Bay are in the midst of the storm which is producing large hail and some rainfall.

Bureau of Metereology metereologist Andrew Bufalino said areas east of Monto to Gayndah are likely to see the thunderstorm develop.

"The storm is currently hitting parts of Maryborough and Tiaro and is likely to be severe near Childers and Howard,” Mr Bufalino said.

"We're definitely keeping an eye on it as it's building up and the chance that Mount Perry and Biggenden will get it, is more likely.”

Mr Bufalino said they did the best they could to detect where storms were heading but said storms were very hit and miss.

"It can be sunny one minute and raining the next,” he said.

The severe storm tore roofs off west of Rainbow Beach earlier this afternoon.

"There can be up to 30mm of rain expected with large hail,” he said.

People are encouraged to stay up to date via the Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather is expected to clear up on Wednesday.
