SHARNI Layton has been named to make her return to international netball, with the defender named in the 14-player squad to tour in January next year.

Layton makes her return to the Diamonds after missing the Quad Series and Constellation Cup recently due to exhaustion, but her eligibility to tour is still subject to medical clearance.

Midcourter Paige Hadley has also been recalled to the national side along with shooter Gretel Tippett, who both represented Australia at last weekend's Fast 5 tournament.

"Sharni has been named for the upcoming Quad Series subject to medical clearance after taking a leave of absence over the last three months," said coach Lisa Alexander.

"She is looking forward to getting back into training and joining her teammates for the upcoming training block."

The entire Diamonds squad will gather at the Netball Centre of Excellence at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra from January 11-14 for a Commonwealth Games simulation camp, before the 14 Quad Series athletes travel to England.

The team will travel to London and Johannesburg in January 2018 to contest the Netball Quad Series, during which selectors hope that "all options are explored prior to selection of the Commonwealth Games team in February, hence the changes from our Constellation Cup team, and continuing our focus on the high-performance process".

Former captain Laura Geitz has not been named at this stage, but is a chance of a call-up.

"Although this is the final tour prior to the Commonwealth Games, the door is still open for all squad members to put their best foot forward for a position in the Commonwealth Games team of 12," Alexander said.

"We have had an initial conversation with Laura Geitz, who is progressing well in her training. We will look at making a decision later this year around whether she will be invited into the January Simulation Camp as a training partner."

2018 Quad Series team: Caitlin Bassett, April Brandley, Courtney Bruce, Paige Hadley, Sharni Layton, Kate Moloney, Susan Pettitt, Kim Ravaillion, Gabi Simpson, Caitlin Thwaites, Gretel Tippett, Liz Watson, Jo Weston, Stephanie Wood.
