68mm falls in two hours in unseasonal storm

A LATE autumn storm that pushed through southern Queensland overnight dropped heavy rain across the southern end of the Sunshine Coast.

Falls of up to 68mm were recorded in the space of a couple of hours at Ewen Maddock Dam, Golden Beach, Beerwah, Beerburrum and Glasshouse Mountains.

Weatherzone meteorologist Brett Dutschke said storms that intense were unusual so late into autumn.

"Normally storm activity is contracted well to the north," he said.

"A lot of this rain fell in the space of just a couple of hours and it adds up to more than a third of the monthly average.

"It's unusually intense rain."

The low pressure trough that triggered the storms is expected to weaken as it moves north, but there remains a chance of more thunderstorms on Tuesday between 10am and 6pm with the potential for rain falls of 20mm.

The storm passed over the coast about midnight Monday.

LOOKING AHEAD

A cooler, drier air mass is expected to reach the Sunshine Coast on Wednesday, pushing showers and storms to the north of Fraser Island.

"It should be generally dry," Mr Dutschke said.

"Thursday and Friday are looking dry and mostly sunny.

"We might get showers developing again on the weekend. There's a small chance of showers on Saturday."

Mr Dutschke said storms could return on Sunday and Monday.
