Strikers draw as Mavericks taste victory
Soccer: Monto Soccer Club's Under-16 Mavericks have again shown they are one of the teams to beat in the competition, easing to a 6-0 victory.
Mavericks were kept reasonably quiet in the first half by their high standards, only netting two goals, but in the second half the engine room clicked, with the forward line making a series of deep raids through the opposition defence.
Declan Howlett scored a brace, as did Isaac Green playing up from the U14B Strikers, while Blake Barnett and captain Liam Green were the other players who appeared on the score
"The team played really well in the first half, maintaining their positional structure and stringing their passes together, which set them up for their 6-0 win,” coach Natasha Howlett said.
"Our back line of Nakayla Myles, Daniel Kling, Lucas Spletter and Ralph Domingo were also strong.”
Meanwhile, the U14B Strikers, missing a clutch of their run on side, scrapped their way to a 4-all draw against the Wildcats.
Balun Delaney-O'Reilly, playing outside his usual position as goalkeeper due to a knee injury, netted a goal, as did Isaac Green and Matthew Baldwin, who sank a brace.
Coach Tyrone O'Reilly said the result was especially impressive as they played the first half with only nine players, before being replenished in the second half by reinforcements from the U12B Thunder.
"They were running on fumes at the end,” O'Reilly said.
"They literally willed themselves to do it.”
The coach said the match could have gone either way, as the teams traded goal for goal.
"It was anyone's game,” he said.
