Students take practical experience trip

STUDENTS from Corinda State High school took a farm experience tour of Monto to learn about agricultural life in the country.

The group of nine came up on Monday morning and split into pairs living on a host property, where they got to spend a day working on a farm.

Then on Wednesday, they went to visit the Monto saleyards and had a lesson at the high school, followed by a visit to Monto Vet and Bailey Creek Piggery.

Many students that came had an interest in working in agriculture, and some even had practical experience.

Tony Josiah and Hayden Smith, who spent Tuesday working with cattle on the Penney's farm, already had plenty of experience.

"We'll have to move to get a gig like this, but we have people we can do work experience with,” Tony said.

"It's a good learning experience, seeing how much all the different cattle go for,” Hayden said.

It was different for some, such as Josie Williams, whose experience owning a pet pig did little to prepare her for working on Salisbury's piggery.

"I've spent a lot of time around farm animals, but we were more on the nurture side,” Josie said.

Dieta Salisbury said it was a mutually beneficial experience.

"They actually gave me knowledge about how much a beast eats and drinks in a day,” Mrs Salisbury said.

"They're going to have lots of different experiences; they're going to do some data entry on Thursday, we've got mustering on Friday, and some welding.”

Corinda senior science and agriculture teacher Stuart Halsey said they would see agriculture through a new set of eyes.

"They take away a better understanding of what it takes to grow the food and the fibre they take for granted every day,” Mr Halsey said.
