Surfer punches shark to escape attack during live broadcast

A SHARK attack has halted the final of the J-Bay Open surfing competition in South Africa.

The World Surf League live broadcast of the final showed former world champion Mick Fanning knocked off his board by a large shark.

The video showed jet skis and boats race to his aid while he struggled to get back on his surfboard.

Fanning was not injured but was visibly shaken by the ordeal which halted the final of the competition against Sunshine Coast surfer Julian Wilson.

Fanning said he "punched" the shark in the back.

Organisers said two sharks were spotted in the water and the competition would be called off until further notice.
