Taroom teen set to be Australia's best juvenile campdrafter

WHILE Jaiden Hill's friends spend their weekends studying for high school exams, she travels the country in pursuit of becoming Australia's best teenage campdrafter.

The 16-year-old Taroom girl wants to be an equine reproduction scientist, but next week's grade 11 exam block isn't all she is taking in her stride.

Hill travelled five hours from her Rockhampton boarding school to compete at Mt Perry's Juvenile Campdraft on Saturday, her 41st Australian Campdrafting Association event since the season began last April.

"I did my first campdraft when I was three, my dad led me around the course on my mini," Hill said.

"It's very addictive, i can't imagine a life without campdrafting"

Despite a fall on her first run at Mt Perry she got back on the horse to place second behind Bundaberg's Todd Myers.

"We don't normally see falls like that, to get back up and place second she's pretty tough," Mt Perry Rodeo Committee's Rachael Fitzhenry said.

Hill secured five points to maintain her 118 point lead for the Australian Campdrafting Association's Juvenile Rider Title.

The young campdrafter has family roots in the area.

Her father Pete grew up in Gin Gin, competing at Mt Perry campdrafts throughout his childhood.

"Campdrafting is a very family-oriented sport, I love competing in the Burnett region because I get to catch up with my dad's family and close friends," she said.

Jack and Kate Southern, siblings from St George, are within 10 points of her score.

With less than a month before the season's champion is named, Hill likes to remain humble.

"It's anyone's game," Hill said.

"I'm just going to give it my best shot and have fun while i'm doing it."
