Task-force launched for the Burnett

A SUICIDE prevention network in the North Burnett has been established.

A community consultation meeting was held recently in Mundubbera with more than 40 people in attendance, who agreed support services were required.

Family support worker Bonnie Trevanion said she was pleased to see the community support the initiative.

"I was delighted to see the interest in the community and how many came forward to put their hand up to be a part of the network and assisting to establish it,” Mrs Trevanion said.

"The issue of suicide is not something we can deny or ignore; it effects every single part of our population.

"We, as the people of this community, are the front-line and with preparation, information and resourcing we may just be able to be the change agents of our generation.

"If we don't try, nothing changes but if we do at least we can honestly say we gave it our best.”

North Burnett Deputy Mayor Faye Whelan said the North Burnett lacked "low- intensity counselling.”

Mrs Trevanion said education was key.

"We need to be educating our communities population wide because it is the people who are the eyes and ears of everyone's every day life and often they feel ill equipped to help people who may disclose personal issues or crisis,” she said.

The next meeting will be held in Mundubbera from 6.30-8.30pm on Tuesday, February 27.
