Teen knocks out teeth of her ex's new girlfriend

WITHOUT saying a word Emily Rae Thomas punched her ex-boyfriend's new girlfriend in the face.

The assault damaged two teeth and resulted in $2663 in medical costs.

"This was a gutless, cowardly attack," Magistrate Damien Dwyer told the 19-year-old Mackay woman.

The victim had been in the smoking area of a Mackay nightclub when Thomas walked up and punched her in the mouth.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Duncan Erskine said the victim told officer she'd had a delayed reaction because she'd been drinking and just felt a dull ache.

It wasn't until her friends told her that her mouth was bleeding and she went to the bathroom to check that the victim noticed two of her teeth were crooked, the Mackay Magistrates Court was told.

Thomas told police she had blacked out before the attack and was told was happened afterwards, Snr Const Erskine said.

She admitted to feeling annoyed and angry about the relationship the victim had with her ex-boyfriend.

Thomas' solicitor Chris Colwill said his client had no memory of the night but "rarely drinks" and believed her drink was spiked.

Mr Dwyer said "that's the old fallback" for anyone who got in trouble. "The other option is she found out her boyfriend had a new girlfriend, she got cranky and went and smacked her," Mr Dwyer said.

"A lady was just sitting there minding her own business when you, as I said, in a craven, gutless, cowardly attack walked up and hit her without even saying a word."

Mr Colwill said his client had been co-operative with police and this was her first offence.

Thomas pleaded guilty to the serious assault, was fined $2000 and ordered to pay $1500 compensation as well as the $2663 in medical costs. She was also given a four-month Mackay CBD banning order. A conviction was not recorded.
