Teen’s freak wardrobe malfunction
A stunned shopper claims she was left looking like she'd been beaten up after a top she purchased online dyed her skin purple for days.
Phoebe Exley, 18, from Lancaster in the UK, bought the black crop top for $13 from online retailer Boohoo.com and wore it to a friend's 18th birthday on Easter Sunday, pairing it with a light blue leather mini skirt.
She visited several cocktail bars with friends in the afternoon and then after about 10 hours returned home with her boyfriend Travis Smith, 18.
When she got undressed, she was horrified to discover her skin had been stained a purple hue that looked like a huge bruise.
"I only properly realised what had happened when I got home and took my top off," Phoebe said.
"It had dyed all my bra as well as my skin - it was everywhere."
For ten minutes, Travis desperately tried to scrub the stain off of his girlfriend's back in the shower, but was forced to concede defeat when it failed to budge.
"I was a bit red after that," she said.
According to Phoebe, her skin was stained for days after the event, and has only just started to fade.
"The dye that came off was more purple than black, it was the colour of a bruise," she said.
"It looked like I'd been beaten up."
Phoebe said her mother was horrified when she saw her 'injury'.
"My mum took one look at me and asked 'what on earth have you been doing?' she was a bit shocked," she said.
"I was shocked too as I didn't realise it would be that bad, and I was worried it wasn't going to come off."
It was the first time she had worn the top.
"At one point during the night I did ask my friend if my arm looked a bit blue from where it had rubbed the inside of my arm," she said.
"But she just said 'no you're being silly'. It must have started dying my skin around that time."
Now days later, Phoebe said her skin is still heavily dyed but it is showing signs of fading slowly.
"It's not the look I was going for, but I'm going to wash the top and see what happens, hopefully that sorts it as I don't want to be purple again," she said.
Boohoo was contacted for comment.
