A TEENAGER has suffered a fractured jaw after being allegedly hit from behind at Trinity Beach near Cairns on the weekend.

Police on Wednesday a man had been charged following the alleged serious assault.

It will be alleged at around 12.30am on Sunday a physical altercation has occurred between two men on Roberts Drive and a 16-year-old boy from Cooktown has intervened to separate the two parties.

It is further alleged that as the boy was walking away from the incident, one of the men approached him from behind and struck him on the jaw before fleeing the scene.

Detectives on Tuesday arrested a 19-year-old Yorkey's Knob man and charged him with grievous bodily harm.

He is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on November 16.
