A TEENAGER charged with dangerous driving causing the death of promising young Toowoomba footballer Lachlan Percy has made his first appearance in court.

Jake Andrew Gary Cooper, 19, stood quietly beside his solicitor Nathan Bouchier as Magistrate Bruce Schemioneck formally charged him with "dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death whilst excessively speeding" as the charge appeared on the court list.

The teenager was not required to enter any plea to the charge and no details of the alleged incident were aired in court.

Lachlan Percy, 17, died at the scene of the car crash on the New England Hwy at Blue Mountain Heights to Toowoomba's north in the early hours of Saturday, August 29, last year.

He had been a passenger in a twin cab utility which police investigators claim slid sideways out of control on a verge on the highway heading south and struck a tree.

It is believed Lachlan was thrown from the utility on impact.

The talented footballer had been returning home with friends after the South West Queensland Thunder presentation night when the tragedy occurred.

He had made his debut for the Thunder senior men's team in 2014.

After his client was formally charged in court, Mr Bouchier asked for an adjournment so a police brief of evidence could be compiled.

Magistrate Schemioneck remanded Cooper on bail and adjourned the case for committal mention back in the same court on March 23.
