Templeton reigns supreme at Monto Silver Buckle Challenge
Stockman's Challenge: Kingaroy's Jon Templeton continued his stellar Stockman's Challenge season, taking out the Monto Silver Buckle Challenge Classic on Donald Park Hustler.
The professional trainer added the buckle to his trophy cabinet, having now claimed top honours in three of the five challenge events he's competed in this year.
In May, Templeton won both the Toowoomba Landmark Supreme (also on Donald Park Hustler) and Toowoomba Working Cowhorse Club challenges - the latter being the largest event of its kind in southern Queensland.
While he gets a kick out of competing, Templeton said it's most rewarding to see satisfied clients, and was impressed by the calibre of cattle.
"It's been a good year for us,” he said.
"I've been coming to Monto for a few years and have seen the sport grow.
"When I first came they used to just run the classic, but have evolved to add the Rookie and Juvenile classes.
"It's hard to find cattle - let alone good cattle - and they were really spot on this weekend.
"Organisers should be congratulated for a great event.”
President Kevin Purcell said the great conditions and bevy of volunteers ensured the event ran smoothly.
"The donated cattle and quality of competition was outstanding, and the judging was fair and consistent,” Purcell said.
"It's getting bigger and better, with more competitors each year.
"It's been running for over 20 years now and this was one of the biggest we've had,” he said.
"The standard of competition in the Classic was extremely high and it was close right to the end.”
The manicured arena surface was in top shape for the event thanks to a water truck and grader, kindly donated by the North Burnett Regional Council.
