Throwing discus gold mining style

MT PERRY General Store owner Deb Charles came up with the gold pan discus throw after being inspired by the Dingo races unique Dingo Trap Throw.

"We owned a cattle property at Dingo and then we bought a property in Mundubbera but decided to look at something else and saw the general store was for sale," Ms Charles said.

"When the Dingo races happen they do a world dingo trap throw competition so I thought about what we could do here in the same vein.

"Then I thought why not the gold pan because we are a gold mining town."

The gold pan discus is exactly as it sounds, getting race-goers to throw a classical gold pan like a discus.

"It was an idea to help keep people entertained and here longer," Ms Charles said. "You have to throw the pan like a discus, not a Frisbee or shot-put. You just throw it as hard and as far as you can."

The gold pan discuss throw will be broken up into three groups, men, women and under 16s.

"We have $500 prizemoney on offer, $200 for the men, $200 for the women and $100 for the under 16s," Ms Charles said.

"To register you can come into the shop or you can register at the course on the day, nominations will be $5."

The event will run after the jocks plate and prior to the night's live entertainment.

"The more variety and more fun we can add to the day is good, we want everybody to get involved," Ms Charles said.

The idea for the gold pan came to Ms Charles when she was visiting another small town.

"When I was last in Imbil for a camp draft the Guides had a sale across the road," she said.

"There was a very old gold pan for sale and the man who sold it to me said he bought it from a 90-year-old prospector years ago.

"So it has been around for a long time, I've had it sandblasted, powder coated and painted gold. There is going to be a big trophy and individual trophies for the winners."

The Mt Perry Races are on Saturday, November 12 from 11.30am.

The gold pan discus throw is being sponsored by the Mt Perry General Store.
