Top jockey wants Justice in Railway Stakes

SOUTH African Douglas Whyte, who has won the jockeys' premiership 13 times in his 19 seasons in Hong Kong, is coming to Perth for Saturday's $1 million Group I Railway Stakes (1600m) at Ascot.

He takes the mount on the Lindsey Smith-trained Scales Of Justice, who has won six of his 12 starts and never missed a place, replacing the suspended Paul Harvey.

Whyte first rode at the Perth carnival in 2013 and the following year he won the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic on the Chris Waller-trained Moriarty.

He has also ridden in Melbourne on several occasions, taking rides in the Caulfield Cup and the Australian Guineas.

The veteran, who turns 45 tomorrow, has had more than 11,000 rides and 1700 winners in his career.

Scales Of Justice will carry 53kg on Saturday and has shortened in the betting from $10 to $7. He won last Saturday's Group 3 RJ Peters Stakes (1500m) at Ascot with Harvey in the saddle.

Damien Oliver will return to his home state for the ride on Mackintosh in the Railway Stakes.

For all of his successes, Oliver will be chasing his first Railway win.

Trained by Sydney maestro Chris Waller, Mackintosh has won six of 11 starts including the Group 2 1300m Theo Marks Stakes at Rosehill on September 10.

The four-year-old gelding was subsequently beaten a head when third in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m), before a close-up fifth in the Group 1 Cantala Stakes (1600m) on Derby Day at Flemington.

With 54kg on his back and a master jockey in the saddle, Mackintosh is on the second line of betting at $5.50.

After Saturday's Railway Stakes, the Perth Carnival focus will turn to the Group 1 weight-for-age Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) the following Saturday and the Kingston Town Classic (wfa, 1800m) on December 3.
