Toyota's workhorse favourite LandCruiser 70 Series has been significantly re-engineered for 2016, but prices are up to reflect the changes.

The best-selling Single Cab versions - favourites of miners, farmers and rural workers - now start from $62,490 before on-roads (up $5500) for the Workmate grade, reflecting the improvements and additions.

Single cab-chassis variants now have desirable 5 Star ANCAP safety ratings - a increasing requirement for many government vehicles - thanks to additional airbags (including side curtain and driver's knee) and a full electronic safety package of vehicle stability control, active traction control, hill-start assist, brake assist and electronic brake force distribution as standard.

Engine upgrades to the same 4.5-litre turbo-diesel V8 sees fuel consumption drop by around 10% to 10.7L/100km combined, the five-speed manual gearbox has revised taller gearing for more comfortable highway cruising while cruise control is also now standard.

The new 70 Series has been subjected to over 100,000km of Australian local testing, with around 70% of that taking place off-road in some of our harshest environments.

Australia and Oceania is the third largest global region for LC70 Series - behind only the Middle East and Africa - selling around 8000 units in Australia each year, and over 260,000 in total since the model's launch in 1985.
