Tragic death: Woman killed in cane bin accident

A MACKAY Sugar worker died when she was crushed between two cane bins while assisting a cane train driver yesterday.

Emergency services rushed to McGregor Creek Rd, north of Mirani, about 10.20am but there was little they could do.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Police officers blocked the road while about 100m ahead investigators and emergency services crews worked at the site of the accident.

Queensland Police said the woman, who was a locomotive assistant, had been working at the end of the train during the shunting process when she was crushed between the two empty cane bins.

The 62-year-old was an employee of Mackay Sugar and yesterday the company expressed their sadness and extended their condolences to both her family and those involved in the incident.

Speaking at the scene, Mackay Police Senior Sergeant Dave Parnell said it had been a confronting scene for emergency services and a "very tragic" accident.

It is understood the locomotive was delivering bins to a siding nearby for use by farmers harvesting their cane.

"He (the driver) was trying to communicate with a worker on the radio and when he didn't get a response he thought something could be wrong," Snr Sgt Parnell said.

The driver immediately stopped the train to investigate.

Snr Sgt Parnell said the driver was distraught and he and the woman's husband, who also worked for Mackay Sugar, were being supported by the company.

"Mackay Sugar expresses our sincere condolences and sympathies to the family of the deceased employee and are providing support to her family and co-workers," the company said yesterday.

"Emergency services personnel, police and Workplace Health and Safety representatives have attended the scene and investigations into the incident are continuing."

Workplace Health and Safety officers and police spent the afternoon at the Pioneer Valley site investigating how the incident occurred.
