UPDATE: 25-year-old man remains critical after CQ crash
UPDATE: A 25-year-old man involved in a serious accident on Peak Downs Hwy early this morning, tonight remains in a critical but stable condition.
He was flown to Townsville Hospital earlier today after a truck collided with his parked car around 4.54am Thursday morning.
A helicopter crew, including a Critical Care Paramedic, attended the scene at 5.15am, to assess the young man.
Paramedics worked to treat the man on scene for nearly two hours after the incident.
It is believed the patient sustained possible spinal, leg and brain injuries.
Emergency services confirmed the car was parked on the side of the highway while another male passenger in the same vehicle, who was not injured, went to the toilet nearby.
UPDATE: A Townsville hospital spokeswoman has confirmed the man, 25, is now in a critical but stable condition.
The young man was flown to Townsville earlier this morning when a truck collided with his parked car early this morning.
The man was the driver of the vehicle and was hurtled through the air after the collision according to a RACQ CQ Rescue spokeswoman.
He was treated on scene for suspected brain and spinal injuries for over two hours before he was air lifted.
Emergency services said the car was parked while one man, who was not injured, was going to the toilet nearby.
Photos from the scene appear to show a mining fleet vehicle may have been involved.
The crash was in the vicinity of numerous mine sites.
UPDATE: A MAN is being treated for possible spinal and brain injuries after a horrific crash on the Peak Downs Highway early this morning.
The man had parked his work vehicle on the side of the road just before 5am to allow his passenger to "answer the call of nature" when the door of his ute was clipped by a passing truck, a RACQ CQ Rescue spokeswoman said.
The crash, which occurred midway between Nebo and Coppabella, was in a 100km/hr zone on the Peak Downs Highway, she said.
"The driver was hurtled through the air in the accident and the truck came to stop 100 metres down the road in the bush," she said.
A helicopter crew, with a doctor and Critical Care Paramedic on board, flew to the crash at 5.15am, to take the seriously injured man to Townsville Hospital, she said.
The Peak Downs Highway was closed for some time and traffic was backed up to Nebo, she said.
"Already this year, the Mackay-based rescue helicopter has airlifted 18 people who've suffered injury, some even life-threatening or fatal, as a result of motor vehicle accidents," she said.
Traffic remains affected at the scene according to the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
UPDATE: THE man injured on the Peak Downs highway when a truck collided with the side of his car has suffered suspected spinal and brain injuries.
A spokeswoman for the RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter team said initial reports indicated the two men travelling in the car had pulled to the side of the highway for a toilet stop early this morning when the incident occurred.
It is unclear what direction the pair were travelling in.
The car's passenger, who exited the car to use the bathroom, was uninjured the spokeswoman said.
The driver is being flown to Townsville Hospital in a serious condition for further treatment.
UPDATE: Queensland Police remain on the scene of a truck vs parked car crash on the Peak Downs Highway and one lane remains close.
A spokeswoman said the forensic crash unit had been tasked to investigate the crash.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services were also tasked to the scene.
A QFES spokeswoman said they worked to isolate the power to the vehicles and clear the scene.
An injured man understood to be a passenger in the parked car was flown from the scene at about 7.15am with leg injuries from the incident which happened just before 5am.

The incident happened in the Strathfield area between Nebo and Coppabella.
The RACQ Rescue helicopter was tasked to the scene.
A statement said a truck collided with a parked car and that westbound traffic is backed up.
