Victory in talks with Essien as marquee star

FOOTBALL: Michael Essien could be the next big-name heading for the A-League after Melbourne Victory confirmed reports it was interested in signing the former Chelsea midfielder.

In his heyday, Essien (pictured) was rated one of the world's best midfielders.

A Victory spokesman said the Ghanaian international was on the club's radar for the coming campaign which kicks off next month.

"Melbourne Victory can confirm it has made inquiries about securing former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien as a full-season guest marquee player for the 2016-17 A-League season,” a Victory spokesperson said in a statement.

"Essien is one of a number of high-profile foreign players the club has investigated during the pre-season, as it looks to bolster its squad for the upcoming campaign.”

Essien, 33, who also played for AC Milan, but injuries with injuries hit his 18-month stint and he played just 20 league matches. He also had an interrupted season for Greek Super League club Panathinaikos.

He was released after injuries forced him to miss much of the last campaign.

He won the 2005-06 and 2009-10 Englsih Premier League titles with Chelsea also winning four FA Cups and the Champions League in 2011-12 while at Stamford Bridge.
