Walking program keeps residents healthy

A NEW walking program has been established for the aged care residents at Coonambula Lodge.

The program involves all aged care residents where they tick off their daily walks and at the end of each fortnight, a total is calculated.

Allied Health Assistant and co-ordinator of the fitness program Esther Minty said there has been a huge improvement between the aged care residents since the program first launched.

"Before this program I'd say 'who's up for a walk? Let's go for a walk',” Mrs Minty said.

"Now they say to me 'have you got time for a walk now?' They now want to go for a walk, and it's that little bit of competition going on.”

To help with the cognitive aspect of the program, Mrs Minty chooses places from all over the Wide Bay Burnett and Central Queensland and says to the residents they've made it to Eidsvold or Monto and they can go exploring.

However they're still in Mundubbera, but it makes remembering locations or names easier.

"The residents can visualise and they're walking for a reason now, it gives them that purpose,” she said.
