Warriors enter the fray for '17 season

RUGBY LEAGUE: In less than two weeks, rugby league players will begin to swarm the playing fields ready for a new season to commence.

The Central Burnett team kicks off the season on April 22 with Biggenden Warriors taking on Mundubbera Tigers.

It will be the Warriors' first ever involvement in the competition.

Life Member of the Mundubbera Tigers Gavin Ford is anticipating a block-buster season for footy fans.

"It was disappointing that Monto withdrew from the comp but we now have Biggenden so that's good,” Ford said.

"Eidsvold, Mundubbera, Gayndah and Biggenden will make up the four sides this season.

"Gayndah will have a full day of senior and junior games with the Gladiators taking on the Eidsvold Eagles and the junior Brumbies playing Nanango.”

The Mundubbera Tigers, who were 2016's premiers, look to be in top form, Ford said.

The season has around four rounds, with the finals hosted at the end of August.

President of the Biggenden Warriors, Justin Vicary believes the season will be strong.

"It's looking to be a very promising season,” Vicary said.

"We have a lot of old and new faces in the team which is a good sign for the club and allows for new talent to go through the game.”

One of the Biggenden Warriors players, Jacob Klassen was selected in the Northern Districts representative team.

"We have a lot of talent and especially with Jacob Klassen who was one of five selected from the Central Burnett team,” Vicary said.

"We need all the supporters we can get as we'd love to continue into the future.”

Biggenden Warriors will play Mundubbera on April 22 with Gayndah playing Eidsvold.

The Citrus Cup will be held at the Gayndah Orange Festival on Sunday April 30.

"Citrus Cup is a huge draw card to the region and has been going on for almost 35 years,” Ford said.

"It's where Mundubbera play Gayndah, it's a big challenge that players look forward to playing every year.

"Mundubbera have won the past four years.”

With a thrilling season ahead, rugby league fans and players are excited for show-time.
