Search for missing woman nears two years

ALMOST two years have passed since Barbara Troughton left a note in her Newtown home and walked out on her Toowoomba life.

The former shop owner was seen getting into a car and driving away, according to a witness.

A hand-written note had been left on the bench inside the home she shared with her husband.

She took $100 cash with her when she walked from the home sometime between 6.30am and noon on January 27, 2016.

The Australian Federal Police has added the former Spar Supermarket owner to the long-term missing persons register, a national database that includes details of more than 2000 people not seen or heard from for more than three months.

The site also collates information on any of the more than 380,000 people reported missing each year.

"Investigations into Barbara's whereabouts have failed to locate her and there are grave concerns for her welfare and safety," the AFP site said.

Toowoomba police do not believe Mrs Troughton has met with foul play, but until she makes contact with authorities in person, the case cannot be closed off.

A social media campaign set up within days of her disappearance, urging people to report information to police, remains active on Facebook.

Mrs Troughton is described as Caucasian in appearance, about 163cm tall with reddish-brown hair and green eyes and of "good character".
