Wild storms to follow searing hot weather in Toowoomba

EXTREMELY hot weather and a very high danger today will be followed by thunderstorms tomorrow, the Bureau of Meteorology is warning.

The mercury will reach a searing 31 degrees today, with east to north-easterly winds between 15 to 20kmh to offer some relief.

But it's the calm before the storm with the bureau predicting gusty thunderstorms tomorrow and Wednesday.

The bureau says there is an 80% chance of rain tomorrow, most likely in the late morning.

Weather group Higgins Storm Chasing issued an alert of a week-long active thunderstorm period for Queensland.

Its data suggests there will likely be a number of severe thunderstorms each day across various districts with the inclusion of some potentially very dangerous thunderstorms and possible super cells, large hail, damaging winds, heavy rain, flash flooding and frequent lightning.

A spokesman for Higgins said it would be "boom or bust".

"If it goes boom, storms will explode into severe cells very quickly in the late afternoon with large hail, damaging winds, heavy rain and frequent lightning. This could also include very dangerous storms. If it goes bust, a fine hot sunny afternoon will prevail."
